Arnold Bennett is a much under-appreciated author of the self-help genre. Primarily remembered for his prolific output of novels, he also wrote some real classics such as How to Live on 24 Hours a Day and The Human Machine . In 24 Hour Day, the basic premise is that most workers dislike their jobs and see them as nothing more as a means to an end of continued existence. This was shocking news in itself at the time amongst the British public, but undeniably, probably very true. Furthermore, Bennett argues, time is the one commodity of which we all have the same amount day in, day out, whether we are rich or poor, and there nothing any of us can do about it, except accept our parity with even the richest millionaires. This commodity, exists in the form of the 24 hours per day we are all given. Once we accept this premise, it is up to us to fully utilise the free time within our day, of which we will all find much, whether it is half an hour on the train, an hour at lunch, or whatever, to learn as much as we can and develop new skills to improve our lot.
A very practical man, Bennett probably gives away much of how he himself developed from humble beginnings to become a famous author whose works persist to this day.
